While I really want to throw a Justin Timberlake “It’s Gonna Be May” meme or gif up here, I’ll spare you all that. Since May 1 is a HUGE day with my job, I’ve already used that judiciously enough.
So April was kind of a down month for me in terms of miles; only got 129. But that’s due in large part that it was almost entirely a taper month. My last/only 20 miler for Illinois was at the end of March, so I was on the downhill from there.
April still included three races (if you count pacing) and what might have been my most consistent month in terms of hitting workouts on all the days I was supposed to.
April 1-7 – Got things started with a quintessential Spring run in the Midwest. Started 55 and sunny which turned into 42 and rain through the course of 7 miles. Ultimately, I dialed back the miles a little this week to ensure I was ready to pace the Milwaukee Marathon (The Half).
I distinctly remember my legs feeling “groggy” for most of the week. But when MKE rolled around, Emily and I were on point with our pace team. One of our pacees told us we were better than the Chicago Marathon pacers. I didn’t believe her, but it was a nice thing to say.
April 8-14 – This week, while having my standard run at Busse Woods, also had some of my more interesting runs/workouts.
The first of those being my adventure to Swallow Cliff. I also knew it existed, but never where until I accidentally drove past one night. This workout comprised of hills up the tobogan hill, alternated with stairs. Got a mile and a half of just that.
As many of you know, I like to run a 5k or 10k two weeks out from a marathon. I read once (or I’m making it up) that some elites do this as well to do a short race at faster than marathon speed. More importantly, it works for me, so I’ll keep doing it. In fact, this is the first year I did this where I didn’t PR the full.
So yes, I did the Run from the Taxman trail race at Lapham. Last year, I did the Half while I was busy transitioning from the flu to pneumonia. This year, it was the 10k for me. Overall, it went well, but those hills coupled with tired legs from Swallow Cliff, tired me out quick. Plus I started out way too fast (you’ll read that again).
April 15-21 – I was full on taper at this point. It was a good week of running, all in warm weather. Easy and flat routes were the name of the game. Plus one brief tempo workouts.
The last “long” run was an immaculate 8 miles with Noel, Sanjiv, and Peter (fresh off Boston). It was the fastest we had run the Arb loop as a group (whoops).
April 22-28 – It was taper time this week, which coincided with a busy week of work. Short and easy runs, none of which felt bad; so things were looking up for Illinois.
And then we got to Illinois. I said you would read this again; I got out way too fast and tired quickly. To be honest, I’m not sure my training put me in position to run a sub 3 to begin (I blame winter) but then I also didn’t put myself in position with my 6:24 first mile. I mentioned that to my chiro the other day and her response was “Yeah, that was stupid.” Thanks, Dr. Leah.
April 29-30 – Nothing. Literally nothing. Today (Thursday, May 2) is really the first day I’ve felt like my legs could handle a run. As evidenced by my sprint to the car in the pouring rain.
Wrap up and what’s next
So what’s next? That’s always the question after a goal race, right? Both Sanjiv and Peter have tried to rope me into running their goal marathon with them later in the Spring. And both Hillary and Amy have been asking about my Fall Marathon plans.
Right now, I have no plans to run a marathon the rest of 2019. That could change, but after Illinois (really, at about Mile 15 at Illinois) it’s not something I want to do. As many of you know, the big one is the Marquette 50, and realistically training for that starts on Saturday.
Between now and then, I’ll probably focus on lots of local races. My Dad is signed up for the Wisconsin Trail Series, and I’ll probably try to hit as many of those as I can. Some PRO runs should also be on the docket, chief among them a little redemption at the Firecracker 4. Oh, and an 18 miler in Alabama…in July.
After Marquette? It depends how quickly my legs decide to function again, and what I want to do. Sanjiv and Brian have both put CIM in my ear. But I’ve done a marathon in Sacramento, so that one doesn’t appeal to me a ton. I’ll probably sign up for the Winter Run Series in WI, since I almost accidentally placed top 3 last year only running half of it.
Urban Bourbon is also on the list in October. That one has been on my list for a while, and it should be a good birthday gift to me to get to Louisville and go run that. But otherwise, who knows. Could I end up at the Milwaukee Lakefront? Maybe. Could I opt in for Madison? Maybe. Could I decide to actually try and PR the 5k? Maybe.
